For that money, you can buy a decent high deductible policy (we pay roughly $3,600 for one) and an additional $2,000 for a Health Savings Account. This is fine if you are healthy. If you are sick, you would need an additional flexible spending account for enough liquidity for doctor's appointments. However, the weekly cost for something like that would be no more than the average employee's share of an employer provided family policy. Also, if you don't touch the HSA, it rolls over, so that if you don't use it, you can have your balance cover the entire deductible amount if you need it. I was actually fine with the McCain plan. Some elements may very well be included in the Obama plan if the powers that be are really serious about slowing down cost growth.
